About Rubber Lip Pleco
The rubber lip pleco is a small, practical catfish from the fast-flowing rivers of Venezuela and Colombia. At around 4 inches, it offers all the algae-eating benefits of a pleco without the extreme size of the common pleco. Its body is olive-brown with darker spots and a distinctive rubber-like lip texture used for clinging to rocks and rasping algae in strong currents. Rubber lip plecos are one of the most effective algae eaters relative to their size, methodically cleaning glass, rocks, and decorations without damaging live plants. They are an excellent alternative for aquarists who want pleco-style algae control in moderately sized tanks.

Care Tips
Expert Tips
Rubber lip plecos are ideal for tanks of 25 gallons or more, staying at a manageable 4 inches. They prefer cooler water at 72-78°F with moderate to strong flow and good oxygenation. Feed algae wafers and blanched vegetables like zucchini and cucumber. Unlike many plecos, they remain enthusiastic algae eaters throughout their lives rather than becoming lazy with age. Provide driftwood for shelter and dietary fiber. They are peaceful and unobtrusive, spending most of their time clinging to surfaces. Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water, as they come from fast-flowing river habitats. They are a much more practical choice than common plecos for most home aquariums.
