About Bristlenose Pleco
The bristlenose pleco is a compact, hardworking catfish from the rivers and streams of South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Males develop distinctive fleshy tentacles on their snouts as they mature, which are used to attract females and may mimic the appearance of food-carrying fry. Unlike the common pleco, bristlenose plecos stay relatively small at around 4-5 inches, making them suitable for moderately sized community tanks. They are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours wedged into caves and crevices before emerging at night to methodically graze every surface in the tank. Bristlenose plecos are among the most effective algae-eating fish available to hobbyists.

Expert Tips
While bristlenose plecos are excellent algae eaters, they cannot survive on algae alone and need supplemental feeding with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini and cucumber, and occasional protein foods. Provide plenty of driftwood, as they rasp on it for essential fiber and nutrients. Each pleco needs at least one cave or hiding spot, and caves are essential for breeding. They produce a surprising amount of waste for their size, so maintain strong filtration and regular water changes. Keep the water well-oxygenated with moderate flow at 73-81°F. Males can be territorial over caves, so provide more hiding spots than you have plecos.
