About Firemouth Cichlid
The firemouth cichlid is a charismatic fish from the rivers and cenotes of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and northern Central America. It gets its common name from the brilliant red-orange coloring on its throat and belly, which it displays by extending its gill covers outward in an impressive threat display that makes it appear much larger than it actually is. This bluffing behavior is largely for show, as firemonths are actually one of the less aggressive Central American cichlids. Their base coloring is a soft gray-blue with darker vertical banding, complementing the fiery red underside. Firemouth cichlids are hardy, moderately sized fish with interesting social behavior that makes them rewarding to observe.
