About Common Pleco
The common pleco is a large, armored catfish from the rivers of South America, one of the most widely sold but most frequently misunderstood aquarium fish. Sold as small, cute algae eaters in pet stores, common plecos can grow to 18 inches or more and live for over 20 years, quickly outgrowing most home aquariums. Their bodies are covered in bony plates and they sport a broad, flat head with a powerful sucker mouth used to rasp algae from surfaces. Common plecos are primarily nocturnal, hiding during the day and becoming active at night. While they are effective algae eaters when young, larger specimens rely more on supplemental feeding and produce enormous amounts of waste.

Care Tips
Expert Tips
Common plecos need a very large tank of at least 125 gallons for a fully grown adult. Do not purchase one expecting it to stay small. They produce an enormous amount of waste, requiring heavy filtration and frequent large water changes. Provide large pieces of driftwood, as they rasp on it for dietary fiber and use it as a hiding spot. Feed sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini and sweet potato, and occasional protein foods at night. Temperature should be 72-82°F. If your tank cannot accommodate an 18-inch fish long-term, choose a bristlenose pleco instead, which stays around 5 inches. Never release plecos into the wild, as they are invasive in many regions.
