About Silvertip Tetra

The silvertip tetra is a lively, warmly colored fish from the São Francisco River basin in eastern Brazil. Its body is a rich golden-copper tone, and the tips of each fin are highlighted with bright white or silver, giving the species its name. Males are more intensely colored than females and develop a deeper copper hue. Silvertip tetras are active, fast-swimming schoolers that occupy the upper and middle water levels, creating a flash of golden movement across the aquarium. They are slightly more assertive than many small tetras, which makes them effective dither fish for cichlids while still being suitable for peaceful community setups.

Care Tips

Expert Tips

Keep silvertip tetras in groups of at least six, as smaller groups may become nippy toward other species. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water at 72-82°F and are quite adaptable to different conditions. Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside planted areas for retreating. Their golden-copper coloring looks best against a dark substrate and under warm-toned lighting. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods. They are active and sometimes boisterous, so avoid housing them with very timid or long-finned species. A planted tank with moderate current suits them well.
